Huddled in the inner city of Manila, there exists a home for thousands of poor, destitute, underclass – Filipinos who have settled in the city’s North Cemetery. Hungarian born photographer Roland A Nagy has been fascinated with capturing the cities social issues through his camera lens ever since moving to the large city in the Philippines.

Fly Geyser

Fly Geyser, also known as Fly Ranch Geyser is a small geothermal geyser that is located approximately 20 miles (32 km) north of Gerlach in Washoe County, Nevada. The Geyser is located in Hualapai Flat, about 1/3 of a mile from State Route 34. It is large enough to be seen from the road.

Fly Geyser is a little-known tourist attraction, even to Nevada residents. It is located near the edge of Fly Reservoir and is only about 5 feet (1.5 m) high, (12 feet (3.7 m) counting the mound on which it sits). The Geyser is not an entirely natural phenomenon, and was accidentally created in 1916 during well drilling. The well functioned normally for several decades, but in the 1960s geothermally heated water found a weak spot in the wall and began escaping to the surface. Dissolved minerals started rising and accumulating, creating the mount on which the geyser sits, which continues growing. Today water is constantly spewing, reaching 5 feet (1.5 m) in the air. The geyser contains several terraces discharging water into 30 to 40 pools over an area of 30 hectares (74 acres). The geyser is made up of a series of different minerals, which gives it its magnificent coloration.

Emmanuel Pierrot describes himself as a “domesticated hen tamer, ladybird breeder, occasional gardener, gourmet, and chef.” Oh, and a photographer, of course.

Pierrot’s work for the French newspaper Libération combines those disparate interests into playful photos of food and animals. For years, he’s been making the images to accompany a special column in the newspaper. Every week is an opportunity to exercise his imagination using images from “the world of the dream.”

When the 2013 Moore tornado struck Oklahoma on May 20th, 2013, Charles Gafford III took refuge in a storm shelter. Once inside, he noticed that there was a small gap in the shelter that he could stick his smartphone through. He did, and ended up capturing the footage above that shows what it’s like to have an EF5 tornado — the strongest strength rating assigned — pass almost directly overhead.

The video offers a glimpse of the size of the tornado — the funnel was 1.3 miles wide at its peak — and the its strength — peak winds reached 210 miles per hour. At 37 seconds into the video we see a heavy car tire fly past like it was shot out of a cannon

In Oklahoma, tornados are a common thing. Every spring they occur and every Oklahoman grows up knowing what they are and the damage they can cause. As a native Oklahoman, I’ve only seen two tornados in person after chasing them down. Most of the time they do little damage and dissipate fairly quickly. People are usually more worried about damage that comes from the gigantic-sized hail than from tornados.

On May 20th, 2013, a 1.3-mile-wide tornado hit Moore, Oklahoma, about 10 miles away from my house. It was on a path heading North East slowly. I was watching the radar closely with my girlfriend, as we always do when the sirens go off. We saw footage of the tornado ripping across the urban terrain.

Landscape with a Corpse is a series of images in which Japanese photographer Izima Kaoru merges violence with delicate, feminine beauty. For each spectacle, Kaoru asks his model to reveal their fantasy about a perfect death. He then asks them which designer clothing they imagine wearing when people discover their dead body. Using that information, Kaoru combines the gorgeously styled female models with a morbid final end. However, according to his bio, the images “do not allude to something fatal and irreversible but a kind of elegant and highly aesthetic ceremony.”

First using a long lens, he documents the moment from quite a distance. It’s not always instantly clear what is happening in the scenes, but upon closer inspection, viewers will realize that they are witnessing a disturbing, fictional murder scene. Then gradually, in an additional three or four photographs, Kaoru moves closer to the subject until the final shot is an up-close detailed portrait.

The artist says, “By projecting the viewpoint of the deceased onto the picture, looking down at the beautiful scenery which could be a tragic scene of death in reality, I tried to express my thought: no matter how we die, we will travel up to the world beyond the sky without regretting how we lived.”

photojojo:

Operation Photo Rescue is a league of photographers and graphic designers who help survivors of natural disasters recover irreplaceable family photos.

When a town is hard hit by a natural disaster, OPR gets together and holds copy runs, sessions where people from the public can bring photos in to be salvaged. Kind of an amazing way to help survivors emotionally heal!

p.s. If you’re looking for other ways to help survivors of the tornado in Oklahoma, you can also donate to the Red Cross.

NASA has today released a series of images along with a video following Monday’s devastating thunderstorms that produced an F-4 tornado (winds between 166 and 200 miles per hour) that touched down in Moore, Oklahoma. Several satellites were used to provide forecasters with the latest imagery.

NASA’s Aqua satellite was responsible for a visible-light image which provided a high-resolution look at the storm. The NOAA GOES-13 satellite provided images of the storm every 15 minutes, and the NASA/NOAA Suomi National Polar-orbiting Partnership satellite observed lightning from the system.

A beautiful new book from Aperture, Color Rush: American Color Photography from Stieglitz to Sherman, examines the history of color photography from its origins in 1907 and the unveiling of autochrome, the first commercially available color process, through 1981 and that year’s landmark exhibition and bookThe New Color Photography.

During the space of those 74 years, the list of renowned photographers whose careers were marked by their use of color is seemingly endless, including Alfred Stieglitz, Irving Penn, Walker Evans, Stephen Shore, Philip-Lorca diCorcia, Nan Goldin and Cindy Sherman, among many others whose work is featured in the book.

Making for a well-rounded depiction of the prevalence of color photography, the pages of Color Rush are also full of film stills, advertisements, newspaper clippings, fashion magazine shoots, spreads from National Geographic, and other mediums providing enough material to make any photography aficionado happy.

Prestel‘s new book, The Polaroid Years: Instant Photography and Experimentation, is filled with Polaroid images from artists ranging from Ansel Adams to Andy Warhol, Walker Evans to Robert Mapplethorpe, David Hockney to Lucas Samaras. From its inception in 1947, the Polaroid system inspired artists to experiment. Keep in mind, they didn’t have Tumblr, Instagram, blogs, websites, Facebook, etc., to share and exchange ideas as we do now. The book features essays about Polaroid’s inception as well as the marketing genius of the corporation, and artist statements from Chuck Close, Philip-Lorca diCorcia, Miranda Lichtenstein, Catherine Opie, and more, citing how Polaroids have affected them in so many ways.

Two exhibitions have been announced to accompany the book launch. The first is on view now through June 30, 2013 at the Frances Lehman Loeb Art Center at Vassar College in Poughkeepsie, New York and the second opens September 20 at the Mary & Leigh Block Museum of Art at Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois.

Amazing Still Life Photos of Plants Used for Witchcraft

Working in collaboration with floral sculptor Elizabeth Parks Kibbey, photographer Amelia Bauer’s Book of Shadows combines the floral still life popularized in the 17th century with the other pervading cultural threat of the time: the looming peril of witchcraft. Using plants historically known for their medicinal and spiritual power, Bauer’s work strips away the malignant connotations. In her own words (viaBOOOOOOOM), the Book of Shadows photos “turn these spells towards the domestic, and present a less threatening, more palatable femininity.”

These playful sculptures are a visual reminder to keep a healthy diet. Each image features the ingredients for a delicious meal, with all of the parts organized into precariously balanced structures. Italian stylist Elena Mora collaborated with photographer Karsten Wegenerto to produce this series, entitled Ricettario: A Balanced Diet.

The two artists have created a wonderfully fresh and modern series of still life images that will have viewers seeing their food in a whole new light. Included in the series are salmon, minestrone, margherita pizza, and apple cake. Each attractive and quite unexpected food presentation is set against a solid colored, complimentary background. The clean lines and harmonious arrangements will have you wondering how things don’t topple over

MoMa - New Photography 2013

New Photography 2013 presents recent works by eight international artists who have expanded the field of photography as a medium of experimentation and intellectual inquiry. Their porous practices—grounded in photographic artist’s books, sculpture, photomontage, performance, and science—creatively reassess the themes and processes of making pictures today.

Adam Broomberg (South African, b. 1970) and Oliver Chanarin’s (British, b. 1971) War Primer 2 (2011), an artist’s book focused on the “War on Terror,” physically inhabits the pages of Bertolt Brecht’s first English-language edition of War Primer.

In his signature works, Brendan Fowler (American, b. 1978), a musician and visual artist, overlaps up to four framed pictures by literally crashing one through another, thus mixing photography and performance.

Annette Kelm (German, b. 1975) conflates several genres in single works or in series on a single motif. Carefully composed, not unlike advertisements, the precise objectivity of her pictures is often undercut by artifice and strangeness.

Lisa Oppenheim (American, b. 1975) produces photograms by culling Flickr images of fire in natural disasters or bombing attacks. She then creates digital negatives, which she exposes to fire and solarizes. In her cross-media practice,

Anna Ostoya (Polish, b. 1978) examines the histories of lesser-known avant-garde movements in East-Central Europe in parallel with their renowned Western counterparts.

Josephine Pryde (British, b. 1967) references the history of darkroom experiments and contemporary medical imaging techniques in such photo series as It’s Not My Body (2011).

Eileen Quinlan’s (American, b. 1972) forays into abstract photography are grounded in feminist history and material culture.

The artists in New Photography 2013 explore dialectical reversals between abstraction and representation, documentary and conceptual processes, the uniquely handmade and the mechanically reproducible, and analog and digital techniques, underscoring the idea that there has never been just one type of photography.
