This Week in Photography: The birth of Alfred Stieglitz on January 1, 1864. He nearly single-handedly created the perception of photography as art on par with other forms through opening galleries, putting on shows, and publishing high-quality photo newsletters and written articles. “Photography is not an art,” he said. “Neither is painting, nor sculpture, literature or music. They are only different media for the individual to express his aesthetic feelings.”
Pictured here is “The Steerage,” one of his most admired photos of passengers on a boat in 1907.
